Christopher Casstevens, MD

Specialties: Elbow, Hand, Shoulder, Wrist

As an orthopaedic surgeon I am gratified by the opportunity to help

my patients achieve reduced pain and improved function. I was drawn

to my subspecialty in hand and upper extremity surgery due to its precise

technical nature and detailed anatomy. I find the ability to apply a broad array of techniques including microsurgery, arthroscopy, arthroplasty and post-traumatic reconstruction particularly fulfilling. I completed my undergraduate studies at Vanderbilt University and went on to receive my medical degree from the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. I then completed my residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where I was broadly trained in all orthopaedic subspecialties including orthopaedic trauma, total joint replacement, and sports medicine. Following this I completed my Fellowship in Hand, Upper Extremity and Microvascular Surgery at the University of California, San Diego where I learned advanced techniques used in the surgical treatment of acute and chronic conditions of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder.

Throughout my education and training I have been engaged in clinical and basic science research resulting in numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national meetings. I have found that maintaining these interests helps me interpret new research allowing me to better inform patients and improve shared decisions about their care. My career has further been enriched by international experiences both in the form of medical relief work in Thailand and Haiti and with an educational elective rotation at Universidad de Chile in Santiago, Chile as a chief resident in which I learned valuable perspectives on limb salvage and microsurgery in the treatment of trauma and musculoskeletal tumors.

I believe that the best outcomes are achieved through good communication between doctor and patient with the support of a cohesive team. This requires teamwork in the medical office, in the hospital or surgery center and in the rehabilitation phase to assure that care is optimal in all phases of surgical and nonsurgical treatment.

Outside of seeing patients, I enjoy playing guitar, hiking, skiing and traveling.
